A social media QR code turns "go find me on Instagram" into a single scan. Point a phone camera at the code and it opens your profile — no typing your handle, no spelling mistakes, no lost followers. Here's how to use them well across every major platform.
Why use a QR code for social media?
The gap between "someone's interested" and "someone actually follows you" is friction. They have to remember your handle, open the right app, type it correctly, and find you among the accounts with similar names. A QR code removes all of that: one scan lands them on your exact profile, ready to follow.
That's why you see them on shop windows, market stalls, business cards, packaging, event signage, and the corner of videos. Anywhere your audience is looking at something physical, a social QR code is a bridge to your online presence.
How to make one (any platform)
- Open the QRcritter generator and click the Social tab.
- Choose your platform from the dropdown.
- Type your username or handle — you can leave off the
@, we handle it. - Optional: open Customize the look to match your brand colors or add a logo.
- Download the PNG for screens and quick prints, or the SVG for posters and professional printing.
Platform-by-platform notes
Each network builds its profile link a little differently. Here's what QRcritter creates for each, and anything worth knowing:
Opens your profile at instagram.com/yourname. The most-used social QR code by far — perfect for bios, shop windows, and the "link in bio" world. See the full Instagram guide →
Uses your phone number, not a username, and opens a chat with you at wa.me/number. Ideal for customer service and small businesses taking orders. See the full WhatsApp guide →
TikTok
Opens tiktok.com/@yourname. Great on packaging and in-store to turn shoppers into followers of your video content.
X (Twitter)
Opens x.com/yourname. Handy on slides, badges, and at events where people want to follow the conversation.
Opens your profile or page at facebook.com/yourpage. Strong for local businesses whose community lives on Facebook.
Opens your profile at linkedin.com/in/your-id. Use the ID from the end of your profile URL. Perfect for business cards, name badges, and conference booths.
YouTube
Opens your channel at youtube.com/@yourhandle. Put it at the end of videos, on merch, and on thumbnails-turned-print.
Snapchat
Opens snapchat.com/add/yourname to add you. Popular with younger audiences and events.
Telegram
Opens t.me/yourname — your channel or profile. Useful for communities and creators.
Design tips for social QR codes
- Add a call to action. A bare code is a mystery. Put "Follow us on Instagram" or "Scan to chat on WhatsApp" right next to it.
- Keep strong contrast. Dark code on a light background scans most reliably.
- Size it for the distance. A shop-window code people scan from the pavement needs to be much bigger than one on a business card.
- Use SVG for anything large. Vector files stay crisp at poster and banner size.
- Test before you print. Scan the finished code with two different phones to be sure it lands on the right profile.
